IS IT YOUR FIRST VISIT?
An osteopath aims to enhance your overall health and wellness by treating the whole person, not just a single condition or area. If you’re curious about the benefits of osteopathy but unsure what to expect at your first appointment, here is a simple guide:
DURATION
Your first appointment typically lasts 45 minutes. Subsequent visits are generally shorter, around 30 minutes, depending on the treatment required. You can choose a longer appointment for follow-ups if you want.
WHAT TO EXPECT
During your first visit, we will discuss your general health and the specific symptoms you’re experiencing. We may ask about major illnesses, chronic conditions, medications, past surgeries, and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, stress levels, and work routine. All information you provide will be treated confidentially.
Next, we’ll conduct a physical examination. You will be wearing underwear or shorts. We will provide gowns and towels to keep you covered if needed. You may be asked to perform simple movements or stretches to help us assess your posture and mobility. This will aid in determining the cause of the problem and developing an appropriate treatment plan.
TREATMENT PLAN AND GOALS
Using the information from your health history and physical examination, we’ll diagnose your condition. Osteopaths are trained to identify when further tests or referrals to your GP are necessary.
Our goal is to restore your body to its normal function and support its natural healing process. Common techniques used during your consultation may include:
- Soft tissue massage and stretching to relieve muscle stiffness
- Joint and muscle articulation and mobilisation
- Cupping and dry-needling
- Spinal manipulation
- Exercises and muscle energy techniques
- Lifestyle advice
